To illustrate more details about this unique system, we will brief you on the basic mechanics of the Esper System.

Magicites

You will get your first Magicite from Zozo when Locke, Celes and company found out the whereabouts about Terra. At the tallest building, they will meet up with Esper Ramuh who briefs that about Esper and Magicite. Upon an Esper is completely drained off its powers, it will turn into a jewel known as Magicite. In other words, when you have found the Magicite, you will automatically get the Esper! Esper can be classified as Espers found at World of Balance or World of Ruins

Esper System

You can only assign one Esper per character. Every Esper owns a set of magic abilities and offer a different learn rate. An Esper can have up to the maximum of 5 Magic. Upon equipping an Esper, you will find the Magic command becomes available. Characters other than Terra and Celes, needs to have Esper in order to have Magic command. Upon mastering a Magic spell, the magic command becomes permanent. Certain Esper offers bonuses to status upon the character levels up such as HP +10%.

Magical Orbs
Curative
Offensive
Support/Effect
Curative magic provides healing for the party and fixes status ailments Offensive magic provides attacking magic that helps magic users to attack with the aid of elemental or nature. Support magic provides the characters with additional effect such as Scan, Dispel, Safe or Shell.

For more details about magic, please refer to our Magic Section.

Learning New Magic

Upon getting the first Espers, you will get a new set of points called "Magic Points" in additional to the EXP and GP/gil gained from battles. This will account for the magic points. To learn a Magic spell, you need to have 100 magic points. The number of magic points earned in the battle will be affected by the learn rate that Esper offers. From the chart, you will find that Kirin offers x5 learn rate for Cure. If you gain 2 Magic Point from the battle, the Esper will gain 10 Magic Points for Cure, 2 Magic Point for Cure 2, 6 Magic Points for Regen, 4 Magic Points for Antidote, 10 Magic Points for Scan.

The spell's learning process is indicated by percentage points. Please note that it is possible for Terra and Celes to learn all spells without having Esper by simply leveling up.

Summoning an Esper
Espers do not only account for Magic commands for your characters but they also offers their ability for you to call upon them while in battles. However due to the limited powers of the Magicite, you can only summon them once per battle. To summon the equipped Esper, just select Magic command (it will appears even though you do not have any Magic spells learnt) and push button on the Direction Pad, you will be able to summon the Esper. This can only be done if you have sufficient MP to perform the summon. Different Espers have different summon effects, thus please refer to our Esper lists for more details.

That's all for our Espers Guide!
