What are Guardian Forces or GF?

Guardian Forces, or GF in short, are actually the returning monsters from the legends since the start of Final Fantasy. They can be summoned in the battle via the GF command and launch their devastating maneuver against all enemies. In Final Fantasy VIII, characters do not require Mind Points anymore. GFs also carries their own set of statistics and also gain EXP in battles.

In Final Fantasy VIII, they do not contribute only a huge boost for offense but they helps to make your characters even stronger via the Junction System. Using the character's magical talent, GFs can enfuse magic onto the character's offense, defense, speed and other statistics. GFs are simply everything in Final Fantasy VIII.

There are a total of 16 ability GFs and 7 non-ability GFs. Since GF performs the basis of Junction System, it is highly recommendable that you place them evenly on all battle-participating characters.

What are Abilities?
Abilities are additional skills, allows enfusion of magic via Junction, boost stats for GFs and refinement of items. Abilities can be classified into 6 major categories, as they are listed below:

. Junction - allows you to enfuse magic on the character's attributes
. Command - allows you to equip commands on the characters
. Character - allows you to equip additional abilities that affect the character.
. Guardian Force - allows you to boost GF's attacking ability and statistics
. Menu - allows you to refine items into useful items or magic.
. Party - allows you to equip additional abilities that affect the entire party.

For details on these abilities, please refer to our guide on the Junction System. Each GF is entitled to have 22 abilities at most. The character can only equipped abilities from the junction GF. GFs learn new abilities by gaining Ability Points or AP, which can be won from defeating bosses/random battles. Some of the abilities are hidden or "locked" at the beginning. These abilities can only be unlocked if you mastered its perquisite ability. For example, in order have Med LV Up acquired for GF Alexander, you must have Med Data mastered. Once an ability is mastered, its status will replaced with "Completed!". GF and Junction does not need to be equipped. They will took effect upon equipping the GF. Menu abilities are only accessible via the Ability Menu. Character and Party are equipped the Character's Ability Slots found under the Junction menu. Command Abilities can be equipped on the command list under Ability of the Junction menu.

Summoning GFs
A GF can be summoned by using [GF] command. For details on equipping commands, please refer to the Junction System. To summon a GF, just simply wait for the character's turn and select [GF]. Choose the GF to summon.

There is a bit special about summoning as compared to previous FF series. Once you have selected the GF, you will find the name of the GF covering the name of the summoning character with a blue ATB indicator moving in an opposition direction of the character's ATB. Once the ATB reaches zero or emptied, the GF will be summon. During this period of time, GFs will be receiving damage from the enemy. Once the GF's HP is depleted to zero or KO'd/ or character inflicted with status ailment - Sleep, Berserk or Silence, the summon process will stop. The speed of the GF's ATB is affected by the character's compatibility level with the GF itself.

Compatibility Level
Compatibility level measures only much affection does the GF have for the character. The higher the compatibility, the faster GF will be summon and less crosses on the Boost indicator (See Boost for more details). Compatibility Level can be improved by summoning GF more regularly or use GF compatibility items. As a further enhancement of our guide, we have added ways in getting compatibility items and the monster's location.

Boost
Certain GFs have this powerful compatibility GF ability. They are GF Quezacotl, Shiva, Ifrit, Brothers, Leviathan, Pandemona, Alexander, Doomtrain, Bahamut, Tonberry and Eden. Boost works in battles only. During the summoning animation of the GF, you can hide the gauge indicators of ATB and character's name by holding down the button. If the GF is one of the GFs listed above, you will find a at the lower right corner of screen. There is a numeric digit found next to it. The numbers indicate the strength of the Boost. To build up the number, you need to tap button during the summon sequence. However, watch for negative affection which is indicated by a red cross over the symbol. These GF starts off with 75 and the highest that you can reached is 255. The longer the summoning sequence is, the higher chances of your GF reaching 255 boost! If a GF does around 2500+ HP without boost, it can does around 5000+ HP with 150! Boost are extremely useful and used in conjunction with SumMag +10% ~ 40% GF abilities. GF Eden can does around 600,000+ HP damage with 255 Boost when it is at LV 100! There are attacks in Final Fantasy VIII that have broken the 9999 HP barrier!

Tip: You can make use of a Turbo controller to make use of this feature.

GF Recovery/Ability Items
These items can obtained mainly via Choco World or refinement. A few of them can be obtained via defeating normal enemies or defeating bosses.

GF Recovery Items can be bought mainly from Pet Shops - Timber or Esthar or you can refine them via Leviathan's GF Recov Med-RF. G-Returners are the equivalent of Phoenix Downs for your characters. Pet Houses are the equivalent of Tents.

GF Ability items allows you to replace new abilities on an empty slot. GF ability slots can be freed up by using an Amnesia Greens on the ability to remove. Please note once an ability is removed, it cannot be recovered.

Getting GFs
GFs can be obtained mainly via defeating the GF itself, questing and even using Draw on bosses! The individual GFs includes the methods in getting the GF. Please note that you need to get a perquisite GF before you can get the other. It actually applies to last three GFs in list:

. To get GF Cactuar - you must get GF Leviathan first.
. To get GF Tonberry - you must get GF Odin first.
. To get GF Eden - you must get all previous 15 ability GFs first.

Non-Ability GFs
These GFs are obtained in a special method compared to normal 16 GFs. With the exception of Odin and Gilgamesh, the remaining GFs are summon via a command or using an item that carries a icon. Friendship and Mog's Amulet can only be obtained via the Choco World mini-game, which is only playable if you own the Playstation's Pocketstation peripheral.
