Weapon Upgrading
 
In Final Fantasy VIII, it offers a more reality form of holding weapons. Every character is only entitled to use one of the weapon. There are no more weapon shops where you can buy weapons. You can improve the weapon by locating additional materials and enhance it at a blacksmith or Junk Shops. Weapons does not provide much increase in attacking power unlike the previous installment of Final Fantasy.

The best method is to utilize the Junction System. But this does not mean weapon upgrading is not important. Upgrading weapons allows your character to increase strength and have a better hit rate. Squall's weapon needed to be upgraded as you can get better Limit Breaks only via weapon upgrading.

Before you can perform an upgrade, it is highly recommendable that you got and look for weapon upgrading manuals known weapon monthly. These manual contains information about the weapon (how the weapon is being strengthen and the name is being derived) and the necessary ingredients needed to perform the upgrade. These manuals are found all around the world. All of them can be bought from the Esthar Book Store provided that you have gotten GF Tonberry's Familiar.

Weapon Magazines is not a must for weapon upgrading
The weapon's name will be available for upgrading upon you have received the materials needed to perform the upgrade. This means that you can upgrade a weapon even if you do not own the manual. However once the resources are fully exhausted, the weapon upgrading data will be gone...

(1) View the Weapon Monhtly Magazine for the information about the weapon.
(2) Get the necessary items to perform the upgrade
(3) Have at least 5000 gil
(4) Proceed to the weapon upgrading shop (Junk Shop) to remodel the weapon.

Below features the list of weapons along with the method of getting them and their purchase price. Please note that in order to buy Weapon Mon 1st, you need to have GF Tonberry with Familiar acquired. Visit the Esthar Book Store and you will be able to buy it.

Upgrading Mechanics

The weapon upgrading menu is user-friendly. You can toggle between characters with the D-Pad. The left column shows the materials required while the right column shows the list of weapons that you will be able to upgrade...

The lower portion of the menuy shows stats improvement of Strength and Accuracy. Strength affects attacking power while accuracy affects the hit rate. Next we have a detail breakdown on each column.

Materials Requirement Column
The numbers that are in the brackets represent the quantity of items that you have in the Item inventory. If the numbers required exceed those in the brackets, then you will be unable to perform the upgrade for that weapon. It is possible to downgraded your weapon back to its original form, but the used materials will be gone forever. If the number 48 are yellow in color, that means there is an improvement likewise if the color of the digits are red, the previous form of the weapon is better weapon than the one that you have chosen to upgrade.

After making your choice, you will be given a two options. Pick first option to perform the upgrade while option 2 to cancel. The letters will gray out, indicated that you can't perform an upgrade.

Locations of Junk Shops
To upgrade a weapon, you just need to visit any of the following Junk Shops. The Man in Garden is also CC Group Magician Joker who appears randomnly at the Balamb Garden's Training Center. He will offer weapon upgrading services in Disc 4 where he makes his appearance at the Ragnarok.

Accessing Junk Shop in Disc 4
In Disc 4, you will find all cities being surrounded by a forcefield and prevents Squall from entering the town. The only way to upgrade your weapons is either upgrading through the Magician Joker at the Ragnarok or use the Call Junk Shop menu ability.

This ability can be acquired from GF Doomtrain. You will be able to use it when you have recruited the GF. For more convenience and easier reference, we have listed the weapons along with the statistics boost and requirements under the character's individual profiles.
